What the New High-Performing Designation Means for Carol Woods
What the New High-Performing Designation Means for Carol Woods
If you’ve looked up Carol Woods on Medicare.gov’s Care Compare website recently, you may have noticed a new gold trophy icon next to our name.
The icon identifies Carol Woods as a High-Performing nursing home, a designation from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
It’s a distinction held by a relatively small share of nursing homes. Based on CMS data from September 2026, 60 of North Carolina’s 419 certified nursing homes received the designation. Nationwide, 1,699 of 14,690 facilities qualified.
How the designation works
Care Compare helps people compare nursing homes using information about health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. The High-Performing designation recognizes facilities that meet a set of CMS criteria for strong performance.
Carol Woods has earned this designation while maintaining a 5-star overall rating on Care Compare. The additional icon highlights performance in areas that include staffing and health inspection history.
The designation also means a facility qualifies for CMS’s Risk-Based Survey process, which uses a modified approach to routine inspections for qualifying nursing homes.
Ratings and designations can be useful tools when researching nursing home care. They are best considered alongside other factors, including the services available, the experience of residents and families, and the overall approach to care.
The people behind the recognition
Ratings and designations offer a snapshot of performance, but the day-to-day experience of care depends on people.
At Carol Woods, our nursing, clinical, and support staff work together to care for residents and support their well-being. This recognition is an opportunity to acknowledge the work that goes into maintaining a high standard of care.
Thank you to the team members who bring their skill, attention, and compassion to that work every day.
