A Living Collaboration

Arboretum

The Carol Woods Arboretum is a resident-initiated, ArbNet-certified Level I arboretum on our 120-acre campus in Chapel Hill. This living, educational resource reflects collaboration between residents and our expert grounds crew. With labeled native plantings, an evolving collections policy, and a commitment to stewardship and public access, our arboretum is a peaceful place to learn, walk, and reflect.

Trails and Native Plants

Nature

Carol Woods sits on 120 acres of wooded land where residents live not just alongside nature, but within it. The arboretum grows out of this deep connection to place. Trails weave through stands of hardwoods and pines. Native plants thrive in tended beds and open spaces. Labels now identify selected trees and shrubs across campus, part of a growing effort to support learning and preserve plant knowledge for the future.

Stewardship in Every Season

Grounds Crew

The Carol Woods grounds crew brings deep knowledge and steady attention to the campus landscape. Their work extends beyond routine maintenance and reflects a long-standing commitment to stewardship. The arboretum grew from years of hands-on care, thoughtful planning, and close collaboration with residents. From identifying and labeling plant species to shaping long-term goals for certification, the crew helps ensure that the land is both respected and understood. Their efforts are quiet but lasting, visible in every trail, planting, and well-placed sign.
