About Chapel Hill & the Triangle

Volunteerism
For Carol Woods’ residents, social accountability is in integral part of the fabric of community life. Residents can often be found volunteering at the hospital, serving a meal at the homeless shelter or tutoring a child. Many residents sit on the boards of local charitable organizations, and countless others pursue their passions in the trenches—volunteering to do the small tasks that make a big difference in the world.

In 2006, a group of Carol Woods residents received the Social Accountability Award from the North Carolina Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging for their work helping plan and run a summer camp for children with special needs. Each summer since 1999, Carol Woods’ residents have opened their campus to these children, hosting Camp MeadowWood. The residents and children have created many special bonds as they fly kites, do crafts or play croquet together.
