Jack Benjamin: Harvard College; Columbia Medical School; MD. Jack served in the US Army for three years as a general pediatrician. He was in private practice in Charlottesville, VA from 1973 to 1994 and Chief of Staff at Community Hospital for eight of those years. His academic medicine includes Medical College of Virginia; Chief Medical Officer; Children’s Hospital from 1994 to 2003, and was the Associate Chair of Department of Pediatrics from 2003 to 2007. Jack was the founder of the Teaching Center at UNC (teaching doctors how to teach). He is a Stephen Minister and serves on the Adult Education Committee at the University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill.
Ned Brooks: Bates College; B.A.; Cornell University; MBA; UNC; PhD. Ned has been Clinical Associate Professor of Health Policy and Administration, School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since July 2001. From 2002 until 2006, he founded and directed the Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership. In 1986, he joined the University’s administration serving as Assistant, and later as Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs. In 1997, he was appointed Associate Provost. He served as Acting Provost in the spring of 1999. Brooks has chaired the boards of the United Way of North Carolina, the Orange County United Way, the Orange County Rape Crisis Center, an Orange County Healthy Carolinians committee, the Orange County Human Services Advisory Commission, and the Center for Child and Family Health – North Carolina where he now serves on the Leadership Council. He is Board Chair of the Child Care Services Association.
James L. Copeland earned a B.S. in economics and geology from Hanover College and an M.B.A. from Indiana University. Copeland came to Chapel Hill in 1990 to become President of The Medical Foundation of North Carolina. He has worked in higher education development for more than 35 years and served as Director of Development at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX) for 18 years prior to coming to Chapel Hill. Copeland is a past president of the Triangle Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and has been active as a trustee, treasurer and national committee member with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He is also a member of the Chapel Hill Home Health Foundation and the Interfaith Council of Chapel Hill (IFC) Board of Directors. Copeland and his wife are active members of University Presbyterian Church where they both serve as elders.
Yoko Crume has a B.A. in cultural anthropology, an M.S. in environmental sciences, a MSW in aging, and a Ph.D. in environmental sciences/industrial hygiene. She is on the faculty of NC A&T State University and teaches social work for the Joint Master of Social Work (JMSW) Program with A&T and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Her research interest includes: (1) comparative study of long-term care programs in Japanese and U.S. communities, and (2) aging and the environment.
Robert (“Bob”) E. Dunham, Chair, has a B.A. from Davidson College a D. Min. from Union Theological Seminary, and an S.T.M. from Yale University. He has been the pastor of University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill since 1991. He had previous pastorates in Charleston, S. C., Georgia, and Alabama. He also serves as Board member of the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services.
Gerda Fillenbaum: Bedford College; B.S. (Psychology); University of London; Ph.D. (Social Psychology), Duke University; Post-Doctorate (Gerontology). Currently working as Research Professor of Medical Psychology at Duke in the School of Nursing and the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Serves as a consultant to WHO Europe and the Pan American Health Organization. Is the author of over 140 written works on retirement, pharmacoepidimology, cognitive function/dementia and functional status.
David R. Godschalk earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College, a B. Architecture from the University of Florida and a Master’s and Ph.D. (Planning) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the Stephen Baxter Professor (Emeritus 2004) and was a faculty member from 1969-2004 in the department of City and Regional Planning, UNC-Chapel Hill. He is on the Board of Directors of the NC Botanical Garden Foundation and the Board of Counselors for the Conservation Trust for NC. He was elected to Chapel Hill Town Council from 1985-1989.
Harry Gooder earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Ph.D in Biochemistry from the University of Leeds in England. He is the Emeritus Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Before moving to Chapel Hill in 1961, Gooder taught and researched at Harvard University and the Central Public Health Labortory of the Medical Research Council in London. Gooder is a resident of Carol Woods who serves on the Finance Committee and previously served on the Residents Council.
Mary Ann Taylor Gross is a Carol Woods resident. She has a BA from the University of California at Berkeley. She has been involved in extensive community volunteer work, primarily The League of Women Voters and various youth centered groups. She moved to Chapel Hill in 1991 after 35 years in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and entered Carol Woods in March 2000. She is currently involved with the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement (DILR) and has served on the Carol Woods Housekeeping Committee (2000-2002), the Thursday Evening Program Committee (2001-current), and as moderator at resident town meetings (2003).
Lorna H. Harris: North Carolina A&T University; BS.N. (Nursing); UNC; M.S. (Public Health, Public Health Nursing Education), UNC; Ph.D. (Political Science, Public Policy/Public Administration). Currently Lorna is the Chair & Professor of the Department of Nursing at NCCU. She has over 29 years of undergraduate, masters and doctoral graduate teaching, and 17 years of federally funded health care research, with a focus on health care delivery to minority populations and health care access to undeserved populations. Is the author of multiple publications and chapters, and served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on 37 funded research projects. Won the 2005 Nurse Researcher of the Year, National Black Nurses Association, Inc. Has served on several boards including the Durham Chapter of the American Red Cross and the National Black Nurses Association, Inc.
John Link, Jr. earned an A.B.S. in psychology and an MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill. He worked as a County Manager for Orange County for more than 18 years. He brings more than 30 years of experience as a professional manager in North Carolina local government with expertise in organizational development, strategic planning, budgeting and human services delivery. He is the former President of the North Carolina City/County Managers Association.
Ross McKinney is president of the Carol Woods Residents Association and is thus an ex-officio member of the Board. McKinney received a BSCE from Southern Methodist University, a BA from Southern Methodist University, an SM from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an ScD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was formerly employed by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University and the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Kansas.
Neely McLaughlin: UNC; B.S. (Business Administration); UNC; MBA. From 1981-1983 worked at Ernst and Young, CPAs, Audit division–Charlotte, NC, from 1984-present has worked at Blackman and Sloop, CPAs, Chapel Hill, NC (partner since 1990) and responsibilities include oversight of firm’s small business practice focusing on accounting, tax and advisory services.
Served on the Board of Directors at First Citizens Bank, Rainbow Soccer, Chapel Hill Country Club, and University Presbyterian Church. Neely is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the N.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Jane (Coolie) Monroe, Vice-Chair, has a B.S. in nursing and an M.Ed from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professional experiences include serving as a Staff Nurse at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Psychiatric Nursing Instructor at Dorothea Dix Hospital, and Associate Director of the Office of Continuing Education at Duke University. At Duke she developed and coordinated supportive programs and activities for adults and wrote a grant and received funding to establish the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement (now the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). After working at Duke, she had a private practice in counseling. She has served on the Boards for the Women’s Center, the Henderson Street House Foundation, the Triangle Community Foundation, the Breast Cancer Advisory Committee for the Lineberger Cancer Center, the Home Health Agency of Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill Service League, Durham Academy, the Durham-Orange Medical Auxiliary, the NCMH Hospital Auxiliary, the Chapel Hill Day Care Center, the UNC-CH School of Nursing Foundation, the Board of Deacons of University Presbyterian Church, the Association for the American Dance Festival, and the American Dance Festival Board of Directors.
William M. (Bill) Moore, Jr. has a B.S. from the US Naval Academy and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an adjunct professor of finance at Kenan-Flagler Business School and Partner of Franklin Street Partners. He also serves as Director and Executive Committee Member of RTI International, Chairman of the MCNC Research and Development Institute, Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Weaver Foundation, and a member of the US Naval Academy Foundation Investment Committee. In the past his roles have included Founder, Chairman and CEO of Trident Financial Corporation, Trustee and Investment Committee Member of the National Humanities Center and President of the Kenan-Flagler Business School Foundation.
John J. Pringle is C. Knox Massey Professor of Finance (emeritus) at the UNC-Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School where, in addition to teaching, he has served as Chair of the Finance area, Associate Dean for International Programs, Faculty Chair of the MBA program, and program director in executive education programs. In 1989-90, he was Visiting Professor of Finance at the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has published four books and numerous articles in professional journals on financial management and related issues. He currently serves on the Investment Committees of the American Board of Pediatrics and The Weaver Foundation. His prior professional experience includes six years as an executive with NCNB Corporation (later NationsBank, now Bank of America), two years as an economist with the RAND Corporation, and three years as an officer in the US Air Force. Past service includes Board of Trustees and Chair of the Finance Committee of Durham Academy (1990-96); Chapel of the Cross Vestry (1980-83), Finance Committee (1998-2002) and Investment Committee (present); Board of Directors and Finance Committee of the Chapel HillCarrboro Public School Foundation (1988-92); Finance Committee, Orange County Habitat for Humanity (1987); and Chair of the Academic Affairs Division of the United Way Campaign (1987).
Susan Schroeder has a B.A. from Goucher College. She is the former Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Orange County. She served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the United Way of North Carolina. She is a member of Binkley Baptist Church and Advisory Council Member of the Executive Services Corps of the Greater Triangle. She is a recipient of the Chapel Hill Service League Honorary Life Membership Award. Past volunteer efforts include: Orange County Rape Crisis Center, Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center, and Durham Public Schools.
Juanita Lewis Sedotti has a B.S. and M.B.A. from Indiana University. She currently is the sole proprietor of Juanita Lewis Sedotti, CPA, PLLC. Post M.B.A. she was a senior accountant with Price Waterhouse. Pre M.B.A. She was an executive with the San Diego Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Serves as treasurer, Chapel Hill Rotary; Board Member, Durham/Orange Estate Planning Council; Health Care Committee Chair, North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants; Member, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; and Fervent Member, Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
Patricia Sprigg, Carol Woods President/CEO
Judith Wegner has a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a J.D. from UCLA. She has been a member of the UNC Chapel Hill law faculty since moving to the area in 1981. She was Dean of the School of Law from 1989-1999, and is currently in the final year of a three-year Chair of the Faculty (elected position representing all campus faculty). Her fields of scholarly and teaching interest include state and local government law, land use, property law, the professions, higher education, governance, and ethics. Wegner previously served on the Carrboro Board of Alderman (from 1985-1989), and is currently a member of the Community Leadership Council (community-wide committee including town, university, business and non-profit leaders). Prior to working at UNC Chapel Hill she was a federal judicial clerk, an attorney-advisor in the US Department of Justice and special assistant to the first US Secretary of Education. She served as President of the Association of American Law Schools and was a Senior Scholar with the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching.
James A. Wilde: Wesleyan University; B.A.; Princeton University; Ph.D. (Economics); Professor in Economics Department at UNC from 1965 to 1999. School of Law, UNC, JD. Jim is a member of the NC Bar and in private practice of Elder law. Is a volunteer at the Interfaith Council Community House, NC Council of Churches, Boy Scouts, Chapel Hill Youth Soccer, PTA and the Chapel Hill Senior Center. Jim and his wife have been active members of Binkley Baptist Church for 35 years. |
