Mary A. Beck, Senior Vice President for System Affiliations: M.P.H. in Medical Care Administration from the University of Michigan (1971); B.A. from The Ohio State University (1969). Joined UNC Hospitals in 1986. Served on the administrative staff of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and on the faculty of the Graduate Program in Hospital and Health Administration at the University of Iowa. She holds an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor in Health Policy and Administration at the UNC – Chapel Hill School of Public Health. Ms. Beck has served on the Boards of the NC Triangle Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, and presently is a member of the board of the State Employees Credit Union Family House at UNC Hospitals. She is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Jack Benjamin (John T. Benjamin, MD): Harvard College; Columbia Medical School:MD. After pediatric residency at UNC, Jack served in the US Army for three years as a general pediatrician. He was in private practice in Charlottesville, VA from 1973 to 1994 and was Chief of Staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital for eight of those years. His academic medicine career includes the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta Georgia, where he was Chief Medical Officer of the Children’s Hospital from 1994 to 2003, and UNC , where he served as the Associate Chair of Department of Pediatrics and the Pediatrician in Chief of NC Children's Hospital from 2003-2007. Jack was also the founder of the Teaching Center at UNC (teaching doctors how to teach). He is a Stephen Minister and serves on the Adult Education Committee at the University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill.
Richard P. Blankenship, CFA: B.A., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Richard, a financial analyst, is a partner and senior portfolio manager with Franklin Street Partners of Chapel Hill. He has over 25 years experience in managing Trusts, high net worth clients, foundations, endowments, retirement assets and public money pools. He is a member of the CFA Institute, the North Carolina Society of Financial Analysts, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Richard has served on boards for the UNC Division for Student Affairs, Triangle Family Services, the Durham Public School Scholarship Foundation, the Cherry Hill Foundation, the Friendly City Kiwanis, Croasdaile Country Club and other organizations.
Pat DeVine: Master of Arts from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education and the Juris Doctor from the School of Law. Pat is a retired District Court Judge for Orange and Chatham Counties. She is responsible for presiding over civil and criminal cases. Prior to being appointed by Governor James Hunt in 1998 she served as an Assistant Public Defender for Orange and Chatham Counties. Other activities include serving on the Executive Committee of the Orange County Bar Association, Contributing Editor of Children and the Law in North Carolina: A Casebook for Practitioners and she co-authored, with Wade Barber, former District Attorney, “Prosecuting Sex Assault Cases”. She served as past Chair of the Judicial Division of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (2006-2007), Vice-Chair of the Club Nova Advisory Board (1998-2005), Advisory Board of Chatham County Together! (1999-Present), Advisory Board of the Orange County Volunteers for Youth (1999-Present) and the Education Committee of the North Carolina District Court Judge’s Association (1999-2007).
Stephen Elkins-Williams: BA (Philosophy), Gonzaga University (Spokane); MDiv, Regis College (Toronto). Stephen is the rector of the Chapel of the Cross, an historic Episcopal parish in Chapel Hill, adjoining the campus. He joined the staff as an Assistant in 1982 and became Rector in 1985. He has led the parish in extensive community outreach, including campus ministry, the Inter-Faith Council, a Habitat for Humanity Partnership, prison ministry, refugee resettlement, global mission, and a fourteen-year sister parish relationship with St. Paul, AME.
Gerda Fillenbaum: Bedford College; B.S. (Psychology); University of London; Ph.D. (Social Psychology), Duke University; Post-Doctorate (Gerontology). Currently working as Research Professor of Medical Psychology at Duke in the School of Nursing and the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Serves as a consultant to WHO Europe and the Pan American Health Organization. Is the author of over 140 written works on retirement, pharmacoepidimology, cognitive function/dementia and functional status.
Harry Gooder (Resident): B.Sc.(Chemistry), Ph.D.(Biochemistry), University of Leeds. (England)
Currently Emeritus Professor of Microbiology and Immunology UNC Chapel Hill .
Before coming to Chapel Hill in 1961 was teacher-researcher at Harvard University, and
Central Public Health Laboratory, Medical Research Council, London. England. At UNC Chapel Hill served as Interim Department Chair and as Chair of the Faculty, (1988-91), (elected position representing all campus faculty). Recipient Thomas Jefferson Award, 1994. Volunteer activities included local church council, Board of Trustees, Durham Academy. (President), town representative “Town-Gown” committee, Chapel Hill. Professional activities included Council Policy Committee, American Society of Microbiology (10 years), Editorial Boards in the U.S.A. and England, and numerous publications. At Carol Woods , served on the Resident Council and presently the Finance Committee.
Mary Ann Taylor Gross (Resident): BA University of California (Berkeley). Extensive community volunteer work, primarily The League of Women Voters and various youth centered groups. Moved to Chapel Hill in 1991 after 35 years in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Entered Carol Woods in March, 2000. Currently involved with OLLI- Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University. Activities at Carol Woods: served on the Housekeeping Committee (2000-2002), The Thursday Evening Program Committee (2001-current), and served as moderator at resident town meetings (2003).
Lorna H. Harris: North Carolina A&T University; BS.N. (Nursing); UNC; M.S. (Public Health, Public Health Nursing Education), UNC; Ph.D. (Political Science, Public Policy/Public Administration). Currently Lorna is the Chair & Professor of the Department of Nursing at NCCU. She has over 29 years of undergraduate, masters and doctoral graduate teaching, and 17 years of federally funded health care research, with a focus on health care delivery to minority populations and health care access to underserved populations. Is the author of multiple publications and chapters, and served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on 37 funded research projects. Won the 2005 Nurse Researcher of the Year, National Black Nurses Association, Inc. Has served on several boards including the Durham Chapter of the American Red Cross and the National Black Nurses Association, Inc.
John Hawkins: B.A., Amherst College; Bachelor of Architecture, University of Minnesota. John is the owner and Principal of the John B. Hawkins Architectural firm. He has over 28 years experience in the architectural field. He is a member of the AIA, Correspondent for Architecture Magazine, Columnist for the Chapel Hill Newspaper and a Columnist for NC Home Magazine. John has served as the Vice-president of the Board of Directors of the Chapel Hill Historical Society, Chair of the Town of Chapel Hill Planning Board and the Chair of the Chapel Hill Comprehensive Plan Work Group.
Jonathan Howes, Chair: B.A. (History and Political Science), Wittenberg University, Ohio; MRP (Master of Regional Planning), UNC-CH; MPA, Harvard. He recently retired as Special Assistant to the Chancellor and Adjunct Professor of Regional Planning and Public Policy after a forty year career at UNC. He has held numerous public service positions including Secretary of the NC Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources, Mayor of Chapel Hill and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Academy of Public Administration. He served on the Carol Woods Board from 1998-2004, and as the Board Chair 2000-2004. His father was a resident at Carol Woods.
John Link, Jr., Treasurer: A.B.S. (Psychology), UNC-Chapel Hill; MSW, UNC-Chapel Hill. Former County Manager of Orange County for over 18 years. Over 30 years of experience as professional manager in North Carolina local government with expertise in organizational development, strategic planning, budgeting and human services delivery. Former President of the North Carolina City/County Managers Association.
Larry Loeser:B.A. (Economics), Duke; M.B.A. from the Northwestern University Graduate School of Management with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. Larry has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Harrington Bank since it opened in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1999. He also serves as the President and CEO and as a Director of Community First Financial Group, Inc. and as the President and a Director of Peninsula Banking Group. He has served as a Trustee and Chairman of the Chapel Hill Museum and currently serves as a Director and (delete Vice) Chairman of Downtown Durham, Inc.
Neely McLaughlin: UNC; B.S. (Business Administration); UNC; MBA. From 1981-1983 worked at Ernst and Young, CPAs, Audit division–Charlotte, NC, from 1984-present has worked at Blackman and Sloop, CPAs, Chapel Hill, NC (partner since 1990) and responsibilities include oversight of firm’s small business practice focusing on accounting, tax and advisory services.
Served on the Board of Directors at First Citizens Bank, Rainbow Soccer, Chapel Hill Country Club, and University Presbyterian Church. Neely is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the N.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Kenneth Reeb, Sr. (Ex Officio), (Resident): BS & MD, University of Wisconsin. Reeb trained in Pediatrics at University of Minnesota Hospitals & in Family Practice at Case Western Reserve University. His career in academic medicine was at the University of Wisconsin, Case Western Reserve University and UNC, where he served as Chair, Department of Family Medicine for 13 years, with a special interest in preparing FP’s for underserved populations. His post-retirement focus is on spiritual/religious life, with service on various Catholic Church ministries. His 5½ years at Carol Woods includes: past member Fitness & Community Relations Committees, Resident’s Association Council X 2 (Secretary 2nd term). He is currently serving as President, Residents Association. His son is Ken Reeb, Jr. VP of Finance for Carol Woods.
Kelly L. Ross: BA, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (English). Worked for SAS Institute in Cary, NC from 1986 to 2006, in a variety of sales leadership positions. Since 2006, worked as SVP of Sales and Services for Misys Healthcare Systems and most recently, as North American General Manager for Vignette Corporation. Has served on the Board of Directors of the UNC Libraries, Board of the North Carolina Fellows Program, the Deloitte and Touche Business Women’s Mentoring Program and the session of University Presbyterian Church.
Susan Schroeder, Vice-Chair: B.A. Goucher College. Former Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Orange County. Served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the United Way of North Carolina. Member of Binkley Baptist Church and Advisory Council Member of the Executive Services Corps of the Greater Triangle. Recipient of the Chapel Hill Service League Honorary Life Membership Award. Past volunteer efforts include: Orange County Rape Crisis Center, Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center, and Durham Public Schools.
Jerry VanSant: Wheaton College, Princeton Theological Seminary, Pace University (MBA). Is a visiting professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, focusing on issues of strategic management and the role of non-governmental organizations in international economic and social development. Served as director of the Center for International Development at RTI International, providing management and technical support to development programs throughout the world. Earlier he lived in Indonesia for three years managing a nationwide community development program for Church World Service. Has served on several local and state non-profit Boards including the United Way, the Chapel Hill Library Foundation, the Bald Head Island Conservancy, the Bald Head Association, and the Latin America Resource Center. He has been president of the Triangle Area International Visitors Council and North Carolinians against Gun Violence.
James A. Wilde, Secretary: Wesleyan University; B.A.; Princeton University; Ph.D. (Economics); Professor in Economics Department at UNC from 1965 to 1999. School of Law, UNC, JD. Jim is a member of the NC Bar and in private practice of Elder law. Is a volunteer at the Interfaith Council Community House, NC Council of Churches, Boy Scouts, Chapel Hill Youth Soccer, PTA and the Chapel Hill Senior Center. Jim and his wife have been active members of Binkley Baptist Church for 35 years.
