40+ Years of

Collaborative Living

For more than 40 years, Carol Woods has been guided by the people who call it home. Rather than relying on a traditional activities director, residents take the lead, organizing programs, running more than 80 committees, and collaborating with staff to shape community life. Their leadership creates a vibrant, ever-evolving community rooted in shared purpose and active engagement.

At this point in my life, being engaged means meeting more people and forming lasting friendships with fellow residents—people I’ll share life with here at Carol Woods. I’ve met individuals I never would have encountered during my working life: physicists, mathematicians, historians. One theoretical physicist told me his only research tools were a pen and a legal pad—it was incredible. Life here isn’t structured around a plan, but it's rich and full in ways we wouldn't have experienced living alone.
